Vampire

Vampire: Following WW II, the RCAF wanted to re-equip with modern aircraft. Jets were coming on to the scene and one available was the de Havilland Vampire. It was decided to purchase 85 of the type, a single-seat fighter, all metal except for the nose section which was wood, similar in construction to the de Havilland Mosquito. The aircraft were constructed in England, dismantled, shipped to de Havilland Canada, re-assembled, tested and turned over to the RCAF. Vampires were flown by various squadrons across Canada including 402 “City of Winnipeg” Squadron. At the moment, restoration work on this aircraft is restricted to cockpit area; there is no target completion date.
